This is the million Euro question isn’t it? One that I’m asked at least once a week by either someone looking into becoming a celebrant or even sometimes by celebrants already working as celebrants and wondering if they can indeed make a living from it.
It’s the question that so many people think and the braver ones ask, because understandably people want to know what the chances are of having a sustainable income from something so rewarding.
It’s a perfectly normal question, with no such thing as a perfectly normal response.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m so touched that people want to know my thoughts on it and seek out my guidance, but for all I know about the celebrant and wedding industry, this is one question that I can’t categorically answer.
In fact there are three things that I can say in answer to this question and
all of these statements can ring true for anyone asking.
Yes, you can make a living as a celebrant.
No, you can’t make a living as a celebrant.
Maybe, you can make a living as a celebrant.
At its most crude, your career will fall into one of those three categories. It’s as simple and as truthful as that.
Imagine you’re starting your celebrant career and you come to a crossroad with these statements signposted on them. You will end up going towards one of those directions, but you won’t know which one it will be until you get there.
And that’s pretty much how any celebrant career is destined to develop. There are no guarantees, predications or assurances for how or in what direction your celebrant career will go. But there is much that can be done to help you get to where you want to go.
In the latest episode of the Celebrant Survival Podcast, episode 20, I take a look at why this question is such a difficult one to answer and what celebrants should be bearing in mind instead.
It’s quite a sobering episode but one that I think is really important for those thinking about becoming celebrants, for new celebrants and more experienced celebrants alike.
