COVID 19: Where we’re at and where we’re going

By Natasha Johnson

celebrant business, celebrant work, Celebrants, covid 19

Wherever you are in the world you have your own Covid-19 story unfolding in front of you. You may still be wearing masks. Inside. Outside or both. You may even be in some form of a lockdown and still living with restrictions to both your personal life and your work and business practices. Or maybe you're in a period of rule relaxation.

Our stories and versions of events may all be different but we all are on the same rollercoaster ride - that’s for sure!

So how are you feeling in your current story cycle? Are you fed-up? Relieved? Anxious? Worried? Angry? In limbo?

Or are you simply grateful for the fact that you can, to some extent, get on and do the things that you love doing, namely being alive, being a celebrant and getting to do the job that you love? Maybe you feel all of these things at different times and days of the month.

However you feel - your feelings are valid and are perfectly normal.

Next month, I will have five of my weddings go ahead. Well, that is the plan. This is how we have to speak nowadays, isn’t it? Nothing is for sure. Bookings don’t go in the diary anymore with the 99% certainty and confidence that they’ll go ahead, that we used to have. Everything is still so uncertain.

If I am honest, I am a little bit anxious about those ceremonies. Don’t get me wrong, I will be dancing on the ceiling with excitement nearer the time, but right now, it’s mostly anxiousness. Infection rates are increasing in both Spain and the UK (the two countries that mostly impact my business), there’s a new variant, and couples have to go through all sorts of hurdles to get here.

When they’re here they’ve got our laws and guidelines to get onboard with, and they’ve got to get used to how we do things here. But there is also a feeling that it's their wedding day and I think they’ll do as they please!

So it all makes me a little anxious. Will they even go ahead? Will last minute travel bans kick in? Will I have to face disappointment again? Will I write all of those scripts for nothing? All that prep for nothing? Bought that new outfit for nothing? Lose more money?

We have been through a traumatic time this last year and a half. FACT!

We are moving forward but it’s like moving through treacle, isn’t it? We’re getting there but we’re still a long way off. We're living in a constant whirlwind of going backwards and forwards. Hypocrisy, nonsensical rules and lots of don't-knows. Head spinning madness!

How are you feeling at the moment when it comes to Covid-19? Are you coping? Are you conflicted? Are you able to continue doing what you love? How are you feeling being out and about and doing your celebrant work?

Do feel free to carry on this conversation in our community Facebook group here and get support for your worries or concerns.
