I’ve recently been reading Michelle Obama’s autobiography ‘Becoming,’ and it has left such an impact on me. Not just because she is an utterly remarkable woman and her honesty and candour are so refreshing, but also because it’s so fascinating to read about her journey from a hard-working high schooler to a hugely successful lawyer and business woman, before she’d even met her future husband, the future president of the USA! I can’t tell you how much I learnt from reading her story, not just about her, but about myself, too.
Her journey was so insightful and so real. To hear about her experiences, her highs and lows, her tenacity and passion and figuring out what she wanted out of life and out of her career.
It was fascinating to read about her realisation that being a lawyer, a dream she’d had for so long, wasn’t what she thought it would be and wasn’t what she really wanted. And so she dug deep into her values, passion and desires to work out what she did want to do and she did it!
Okay, so whilst I could talk about Michelle Obama ALL day, this isn’t about her per se, this is about sharing stories and learning from others. And so today I’m sharing my celebrant story and my own journey. And whilst I’m no Michelle O, I still have my own valuable story to share, my highs and lows and how I got from A to B in the celebrant world.
Stories are powerful
Sharing personal stories is such a powerful thing to do. It helps others to feel empowered. It helps others to feel better about their choices, or to know where they have to make changes. It enables confidence. It gives people inspiration and hope. It helps people to see what they’ve being doing well and what’s not working. It can help people to correct and adjust or to keep going as they are. And all of this can be gained simply from hearing someone else’s story.
So episode 13 of The Celebrant Survival Podcast is all about my journey as a celebrant. From how and why I became a celebrant, from growing my celebrant business and to defining my success as a celebrant on my own terms, and no-one else’s!

My celebrant journey has not been a perfect one (hint: no-one’s is) but it’s mine and I fully own it and I’m happy and proud to share it, if it means others will feel better or clearer about their own journey.
